Candida Albicans: An intestinal fungus that can lead to autoimmune diseases

Mushrooms are part of a healthy intestinal flora and compete with bacteria for balance and quantity distribution in the intestine. Normally, fungi are kept in check by good gut bacteria, but sometimes the balance can get out of hand and fungi like Candida Albicans can take over.

A poor diet encourages the Candida fungus and causes a diseased gut

If the intestinal flora is completely intact, the Candida fungus does not cause any problems or symptoms. However, if the immune system is weakened, the fungus spreads rapidly and colonizes the intestine. Under favorable conditions and excessive sugar intake, the number of Candida fungi in the gut doubles within 20 minutes!

This leads to overpopulation (candidiasis) of the fungi in the intestine and the first symptoms appear. The longer the diagnosis of Candida remains undiagnosed and the treating doctor does not initiate appropriate therapy, the more damage is done to the intestines, the range of symptoms increases continuously and the intestinal mucosa is severely affected .

Leaky gut , food intolerance, anemia, vitamin deficiency and much more is then on the agenda.

Since the Candida is not only in the intestine, systemic candidiasis can also occur. This means that the fungus can infect various organs through the bloodstream and thus the problem picks up speed again.

As soon as the candida fungus has spread in the intestines and body, the immune system is massively stressed and usually overloaded.

Then the body quickly becomes susceptible to all conceivable infections and also reacts allergically to many food components, fragrances and much more.

Due to the fact that the Candida fungus tries to colonize large areas in the intestine , the absorption of nutrients in the small intestine is greatly reduced, which can lead to various deficiency symptoms and anemia.

In the long run, these deficiency symptoms naturally come with their own symptoms and problems.

The fatal thing is, however, that the patient has usually been living with the Candida fungus for a very long time and has become accustomed to such symptoms as fatigue, allergies, headaches and recurring colds over time and does not associate them with a yeast infection.

Common causes of Candida infection

There are many reasons for the spread of Candida Albicans. The most important would be heavy metal pollution , long-term cortisone intake, too frequent antibiotics, a weak immune system, stress and, above all, nutrition.

The Candida fungus can multiply indefinitely if regular food intake is guaranteed. The fungus prefers this food supply in the form of fast carbohydrates from white flour and sugar.

In addition, the fungus also likes to feed on  zinc  and calcium, so that a candida infection should always be considered in the event of a deficiency of these nutrients, even if there are initially no externally visible symptoms that indicate candida.

In order to survive and continue to spread, the fungus nests directly in the small intestine , since there is of course sufficient food available there. Thus, the fungus grabs the food and the nutrients before humans even get the opportunity to absorb the vital nutrients.

This weakens the body over the long term, the immune system can no longer do its job reliably and the fungus can therefore continue to spread.

As a result, there are more and more symptoms such as bloating, changed bowel habits, susceptibility to infections, tiredness and weakness. In the further course of untreated candidiasis, the situation can quickly deteriorate, since the fungus can also infect other organs and thus become a serious hazard.

Not to be neglected is the fact that the candida fungus converts the sugar (glucose) obtained from the food into fusel alcohols through fermentation and thus severely irritates the intestines and also puts a strain on the liver.

Candida albicans often leads to leaky gut

In diseases such as leaky gut and especially adrenal fatigue, the Candida fungus plays a bigger role than most patients and doctors realize.

Because with a leaky gut , the intestinal mucosa is severely disturbed and full of holes, so that food components or germs can enter the bloodstream unfiltered.

This damage to the mucous membrane can have various causes, including an incorrect diet, too much sugar, too much wheat, too much gluten – but root-forming candida is also often responsible for leaky gut.

In a systemic candida infection, the fungus forms fine roots that burrow through the digestive tract over time. With these fine roots, the fungus goes in search of more distant sources of sugar in the blood or in other organs.

The food components that have not yet been completely broken down get into the blood through the small holes in the intestinal wall.

The cause of the so-called adrenal fatigue is the persistent stress in the body, which pushes the adrenal glands to their limit and which is caused by the following factors:

How to diagnose a Candida infection?

Apart from the purely visual indications of Candida, such as oral thrush, a heavily coated tongue or circular, dry skin areas on the hands and feet, Candida can certainly be detected by a stool examination.

This is done on the doctor’s orders in a laboratory of his choice or by means of a practical quick test to take at home. If the examination in relation to the Candida fungus is negative according to the laboratory, it unfortunately does not mean that there is no Candida infection . The reason for this is that the fungus likes to form so-called nests , which are not necessarily contained in the part of the stool being examined.

Therefore, when taking a stool sample, you should always make sure that the samples are taken from different parts of the stool. So the probability of unmasking the fungus is significantly higher. But a candida infection can also be detected via a saliva or urine test.

How to treat the candida fungus ?

In most cases, it takes a very long time to arrive at a firm diagnosis of a systemic Candida infection.

But it usually takes much longer to be treated properly. Unfortunately, only a handful of doctors have the skills and expertise to initiate meaningful diagnostics and treatment.

Therefore, if a patient gets the support they need to treat their Candida infection, they are lucky.

There are now a number of medications available to treat a Candida infection. However, simply treating with Nystatin or Diflucan is usually definitely not enough to combat a root-forming Candida fungus.

The drugs can only develop their full effect with a radical change in diet without sugar, alcohol and white flour. In addition, patients may even have an allergic reaction to the treatment, since  leaky gut often  develops over time and hypersensitivity to all conceivable foods and additives in medicines can quickly develop.

As a result, the immune system becomes even weaker and the fungus can spread even further.

It should also be taken into account that the Candida fungus very quickly develops resistance to antifungal agents and becomes immune to the drugs used. It is therefore extremely important to switch between different antifungal agents regularly every 14 days.

Treat Candida conventionally

Classic antifungal medications are usually prescribed to treat Candida overgrowth. In most cases it is nystatin.

This drug is available from different manufacturers and it does not require a prescription! Nystatin has the advantage that it cannot get into the bloodstream and does its work exclusively in the intestine.

Because of this, the nystatin itself has no side effects, but the treatment of Candida leads to an initial deterioration, the so-called Herxheimer reaction, which brings with it serious “side effects”.

Nystatin comes in tablet form and also as a suspension. The tablets should be taken for at least 14 days. Better but over a period of 30 days. Two tablets three times a day after meals for one to two weeks and then one tablet three times a day.

With a 4-week standard treatment, that would be 126 tablets of 100,000 IU

Since the Candida fungus is not only in the intestines, but inhabits the entire digestive tract from the mouth to the rectum, it is extremely important to use the suspension parallel to the tablet treatment in order to eliminate the fungi in the mouth, esophagus and stomach.

If the fungus has been in the gut for a long time, or if an attempt has been made to starve the fungus without taking the appropriate antifungal, the Candida infection may have become systemic.

This means that the fungus has spread through the bloodstream and its roots in the body and may have affected other organs, which of course can lead to corresponding symptoms.

In this case, systemic antifungal agents such as the prescription fluconazole are available, which works effectively throughout the body via the bloodstream. However, it also comes with many side effects and actually only works reliably the first time you use it.

If you then let the candida diet slide or overdo it with sugar, white flour and alcohol, candida can spread again and the effect of the fluconazole would then definitely not be as promising as the first time.

Treat Candida Naturally

However, nystatin and fluconazole are both chemical agents against the intestinal fungus and are therefore not necessarily for everyone.

Nature, on the other hand, offers a variety of natural “antibiotics” and antifungal agents, which are in no way inferior to the chemical ones in their effect and can be used either as an alternative to conventional antifungal medicines or as a supplement:

Caprylsäure

Normally, the fungus in the intestine is part of the normal intestinal flora and forms the immune system with the intestinal bacteria. However, if the body is out of balance due to antibiotics, stress, illness or excessive sugar consumption, the candida fungus multiplies explosively and a yeast infection occurs – candidiasis.

Caprylic acid is able to change the fluidity and permeability of the cell membrane of the Candida fungi and thus cause the cell membrane to disintegrate.

Normally, the human intestinal flora is able to produce sufficient amounts of caprylic acid to prevent a fungal infection in the intestine. If, on the other hand, the intestinal flora is disturbed, a course of treatment with caprylic acid lasting several weeks is the drug of choice to protect against fungal infestation.

This is because, unlike many other intestinal fungus preparations, this acid is not made from mold. For this reason, the risk of allergies is zero, which makes caprylic acid the ideal, natural antifungal agent.

Does caprylic acid have side effects?

If you stick to the recommended daily dose of max. 2000mg, no side effects are known. With an intake of significantly more than 5000mg daily, slight nausea and stomach or intestinal problems have been reported. However, if the caprylic acid is taken with meals, there should be no problems.

However, if there is a high amount of Candida in the intestine, it is quite possible that the so-called Herxheimer reaction will occur. This is an initial deterioration due to the fact that the yeast fungi in the intestine die off in large numbers due to the caprylic acid and thus release a considerable amount of toxins and antigens.

These cause dizziness, fatigue, a feeling of lightheadedness, headaches, insomnia and more. If caprylic acid is taken regularly, this reaction can last between a few days and several weeks and is often the reason why Candida patients unfortunately discontinue treatment prematurely.

In most cases, however, these symptoms of poisoning subside significantly within a week. The only positive thing about the Herxheimer reaction is the fact that the caprylic acid works and eliminates the intestinal fungus.

Grapefruitkernextrakt

The grapefruit itself is not only a very tasty food, but also a healthy one. In relation to the fruit, this is due to the particularly high  vitamin C content, but this is only the tip of the iceberg, because really outstanding properties and an extraordinary effect can be found in the seeds of the grapefruit.

The plant has adapted over the course of its development and has developed a very effective defense system, which can be found in the seeds of the grapefruit and which protects the grapefruit from all conceivable parasites, bacteria and fungi.

The grapefruit seeds contain a variety of highly effective bioflavonoids and glycosides, which have a strong growth-inhibiting effect on fungi, viruses and bacteria.

The bioflavonoids and glycosides contained include the following:

Oregano is an aromatic, fragrant herb that is now indispensable in modern kitchens. Commonly known as a pizza spice, this herb has been used to flavor a variety of foods for many decades.

However, its healing effect has been known for centuries and was already used by the ancient Greeks to treat a wide variety of ailments.

Oregano, especially the “wild marjoram”, was known in the Middle Ages as the “antibiotic of the poor” and was often used for diseases of the gastrointestinal tract and the respiratory tract.

Oregano oil helps with inflammation

Unfortunately, this turned out to be a big letdown. The tea was almost 12 EUR a kilo cheaper than in the local tea shop, but the effect is hardly worth mentioning. The taste is a real disaster as well as the smell.

To be on the safe side, I bought a small amount of the Lapacho tea in the shop a few days ago to see if my impression was correct and it was confirmed. From a purely visual point of view, these are two completely different teas.

So it’s worth spending a few euros more and comparing. And if possible, really not to order on the Internet.

If you use organic whole milk for the production of milk kefir, even more nutrients are created. The omega-3 fatty acids are particularly worth mentioning. Depending on the fermentation time and temperature, the content of lactic acid bacteria and yeasts varies. If the milk kefir is prepared for 48 hours, it contains more lactic acid bacteria than with a 24-hour fermentation time.

If you choose a fermentation temperature of around 25 degrees, mainly lactic acid bacteria and very little alcohol are formed. If the fermentation temperature is below 20 degrees, more yeast and, above all, more alcohol and carbon dioxide are formed.

Prepare milk kefir yourself – this is how it works!

First, of course, you need the kefir grains. You can get these in health food stores or order them online. The second ingredient is the milk. You can basically use any kind of milk: cow’s milk, goat’s milk, soy milk, coconut milk or almond milk.

The kefir grains are placed in an absolutely clean mason jar and filled with milk. It is best to remove the rubber from the lid of the glass, because carbonic acid is produced during the fermentation process. If the jar is sealed completely airtight, the mason jar may burst.

The glass is then covered with a kitchen towel or something similar to protect the kefir from light. Use a room thermometer to choose a suitable place for storing the kefir. In order for the kefir mushroom to work optimally, a temperature of between 10 and 25 degrees should be aimed for.

The warmer the place, the faster the fermentation process. But more lactic acid bacteria are also produced. In return, the alcohol content decreases and fewer yeast fungi can multiply. The fermentation time is usually around 48 hours, but can also be shorter. After 48 hours, however, one can assume that the lactose in the milk has been almost completely broken down.

During this time, a good amount of probiotic microorganisms should have developed and the kefir should have developed its tingling, sour taste. It is important that the kefir is poured off with the help of a plastic sieve and that you do not touch the kefir fungus with metal objects, otherwise it can be damaged. Then you rinse the vessel out again and start again.

If you want to drink milk kefir all the time, you should get at least two or three glasses and prepare a corresponding amount of kefir so that you have a full supply. The kefir fungus can be used again and again, as the fungus keeps growing and dividing. If too much kefir fungus has developed, simply throw away the excess or give it away to friends.

Effective combination preparations against Candida infestation

If the infestation with the Candida Albicans fungus is severe, successful treatment can often take years. In order to keep the fungus in check as effectively as possible, there are now very good combination preparations on the market, which combine the most effective, natural antifungal agents and are particularly good and quick to success. However, these drugs should not be taken at the beginning of treatment, since the Herxheimer reaction and thus the symptoms can be very strong in this way.

The candida diet is a key ingredient in successfully treating intestinal fungus

If an infestation with Candida Albicans has been diagnosed, a consistent change in diet is inevitable and is basically the most important pillar of treatment. Above all, rapidly available carbohydrates in the form of sugar and white flour must be exchanged for vegetables, fruit, fish, meat and, if necessary, whole grain products, as these provide the Candida fungus with a breeding ground for constant reproduction.

You should also take your time and take a closer look at the list of ingredients of the foods you have used so far. Nowadays there is hardly any food in the supermarket that does not contain sugar. And the amounts of sugar are really alarming. Even such inconspicuous products as ketchup or mustard contain a lot of sugar today.

However, starving the mushroom completely (completely avoiding sugar) is no longer recommended these days, as the mushroom becomes more active when there is too little sugar. On the one hand, it releases toxins that have a damaging effect on the organism and, above all, on the liver.

On the other hand, the Candida fungus tries to drill its roots through the intestinal wall in order to get to the sugar in the blood or the blood vessels. Small amounts of fructose in the form of fruit and vegetables should therefore always be consumed.

However, there are also positive things to report about the Candida diet: It is very healthy and lets your pounds tumble. This may sound like little consolation at first, but it helps the patient to persevere during the difficult phase, since success is quickly visible.

In principle, the choice of food must meet the following criteria in order to be successful:

  • It must be low in carbohydrates to deprive the Candida fungus of its food source. Fiber should be the main diet, followed by meat, fish, healthy fats, oils, nuts and seeds
  • The foods you choose should be good for your digestion and promote it instead of inhibiting it.
  • The foods chosen must be nutritious, strengthen the immune system and be easily digested.
  • The foods chosen should have antifungal activity (garlic, ginger, cinnamon, oregano, onions, etc.)

It is important that the patient understands that dieting alone will not work. Likewise, treatment with an antifungal alone will not work. Only the combination can work in the long term, provided the patient has staying power and consistently sticks to their diet.

The candida diet is very challenging for most patients. You have to be particularly patient. However, most patients usually notice relatively quickly that the change in diet and fungal treatment lead to a significantly better condition and that the effort is worth it.

This leads to constant motivation and allows the fungus to be defeated in the long run and one’s own state of health to be significantly improved. But no matter how good the intentions, there will always be small relapses and sugar addicts of some kind.

However, this will quickly become noticeable with a series of symptoms, which usually cause the patient to resume the Candida diet. The duration of the Candida treatment including diet depends on the duration of the infection and the severity of the infection and can therefore not be given a general number.

But it is often the case that the first sustained improvements in well-being occur after just a few weeks and manifest themselves after 6-12 months. However, there are also many patients who need years to become healthy again. Others, on the other hand, have to follow the diet for a lifetime in order not to be immediately overgrown with the Candida fungus again.

However, the success of the treatment mostly depends on how consistently you carry out the treatment and the diet.

Herxheimer reaction – the die-off

When a candida infection is treated, the great die-off of the fungi begins, which is also called die-off and can be particularly unpleasant, especially at the beginning of the treatment, with the release of large amounts of toxins and antigens, and demands a lot from the body.

The liver and the adrenal glands are very badly affected during a Candida treatment and cause severe tiredness and weakness. But symptoms such as dizziness, drowsiness, headaches and insomnia are also very classic for this unpleasant phase of candida treatment.

However, when healing really starts after a few weeks, the die-off symptoms flatten out, the intervals become less frequent and occur at longer intervals.

No matter how uncomfortable the Herxheimer reaction is, the only good thing about it is that you can be sure that the treatment is actually working and that the patient is on the right track. From here it is a game for time and a challenge to the patient’s stamina.

To make things at least a little easier, you can bind the released toxins with psyllium husks or activated charcoal. To do this, take it about 1 hour after taking the respective antifungal agent. However, a high fluid intake in the form of still water or tea is then an absolute must, otherwise constipation is inevitable.
