Vertigo – Dizziness Exercises

Vertigo – dizziness exercises can be recommended as part of the treatment of diseases that cause dizziness such as benign paroxysmal positional vertigo and labyrinthitis. Dizziness in vertigo can limit daily life and make you feel sick. Some simple exercises and maneuvers can provide relief from complaints.

One of the most common causes of dizziness is benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV). It occurs with the displacement of small calcium crystals in the part that senses balance in the inner ear. Dizziness occurs when turning in bed, lying down and getting up, and when the head is tilted. It is more common after the age of 60. It is relatively easy to treat. However, first of all, the cause of the dizziness should be determined and if the problem is caused by the inner ear, it should be determined which side is affected. For this, you should be examined by an otolaryngologist. In the treatment of BPPV, it is possible to move the calcium crystals and provide relief with some maneuvers.

Below we have described one of the recommended exercises for BPPV, the Brandt-Daroff exercises. These exercises may not be suitable for everyone. You should follow the recommendations of your otolaryngologist. There are also different methods such as the Foster maneuver, the Epley maneuver, and the Semont maneuver.

How to Do Dizziness Exercises?

  • Start in an upright position in bed.
  • Lie on your right side as shown in the figure. It should take you 1-2 seconds to move from the starting position to this position.
  • Try to keep your head at a 45 degree angle. To make it easier to do this, you can imagine someone standing 2 meters in front of you and you are constantly trying to look at their face.
  • Hold this way for 30 seconds or until your dizziness subsides.
  • Return to an upright sitting position and hold for 30 seconds.
  • Then lie on your other side. Transition from sitting position to this position should take as little as 1-2 seconds.
  • Try to keep your head at a 45 degree angle.
  • Hold this way for 30 seconds or until your dizziness subsides.
  • Return to an upright sitting position and hold for 30 seconds.

So you have done the exercise once. Complete a set by repeating five times. You must complete one set three times a day (morning, noon and evening). Continue the exercises for two weeks.

If you experience symptoms such as weakness, numbness or vision changes during these movements, except for dizziness, do not continue the exercises and consult your doctor.
